Bilbao’s ALKUPERÄ band is unveiling their newest video for “Ataraxia/Aponía”, serving as the conclusion to their debut LP “Sendero Desesperanza” released in 2025. This visual installment comes after the album’s release, functioning as a concluding piece rather than a promotional tool.

The group’s explanation for selecting “Ataraxia/Aponía” is rooted in its representation of the album’s distinct musical and lyrical elements. They aimed to capture the dark, existential atmosphere and pessimistic lyrics that characterize their music. The song condenses the tensions and unease found throughout the record into a concise under three-minute experience without oversimplifying the depth of the album.

“Sendero Desesperanza” was recorded live in a weekend in late January 2025 at Gaua Estudios in Fruiz, Basque Country. The album consists of eight tracks, with a deliberate structure that sets the tone for the band’s sound. ALKUPERÄ operated with a DIY ethos, handling various aspects of the album production and release themselves.

Musically, the band’s style is rooted in late ’90s and early 2000s screamo and post-hardcore, influenced by their local environment. Although the band formed in 2024, its members have extensive experience in the DIY music scene spanning various genres. ALKUPERÄ quickly found their stride, drawing on their shared musical backgrounds to create music that speaks to their values and experiences.

The band’s commitment to DIY culture, vegetarianism, and veganism spills over into their music. “Sendero Desesperanza” grapples with themes of human nature and self-reflection, presented in a straightforward and confrontational style free from melodrama.

ALKUPERÄ’s dedication to political screamo sets them apart from contemporary trends, aiming to continue the legacy of earlier politically charged bands. The video for “Ataraxia/Aponía” serves as a capstone for the album while the band looks ahead to their next project, promising an evolution in their sound while remaining true to their artistic identity.

The band’s forthcoming work promises to push boundaries while honoring their roots, showcasing an ongoing commitment to their music and message. “Ataraxia/Aponía” encapsulates ALKUPERÄ’s current chapter, inviting listeners to delve into their unique world before turning the page to what comes next.
