Throughout the 2010s, Molly Venter and Eben Pariser, the talented duo behind the Americana folk group Goodnight Moonshine, embraced a life on the road, sharing their music far and wide. Venter, known for her powerful vocals and commanding stage presence, toured extensively with the popular Americana folk trio Red Molly. Pariser, a skilled musician, guitarist, and producer, brought his unique blend of music with the group Roosevelt Dime. Together, as Goodnight Moonshine, they graced stages at music festivals and venues across the country.

Then the pandemic struck, disrupting the couple’s touring life and leaving them at home with their three young children, including newborn twins. Suddenly, the allure of performing live was replaced by the realities of caring for a growing family without the usual support network. Venter described this period as overwhelming and chaotic, reflecting on the challenges they faced during those early days of lockdown.

Out of this upheaval came Goodnight Moonshine’s latest album, “Business Unusual,” which captures the raw emotions and experiences of that tumultuous time. Venter, a New Haven native with a musical upbringing, found her inspiration in the mundane routines of daily life and the conflicting emotions of gratitude and exhaustion that defined those early months. Pariser, originally from Maine, joined Venter on this musical journey, shifting their focus to their collaborative project in the absence of live performances.

The album’s final track, “Welcome Home,” embodies a message of warmth and connection inspired by a festival experience in Austin, Texas. This song reflects the duo’s realization that family life and musical pursuits need not be at odds with each other, but rather can coexist in harmony. In a time of uncertainty and change, Venter and Pariser rediscovered the joy of making music together, cultivating a sense of belonging and community that transcends traditional boundaries.

As they prepare for their album release show at the Space Ballroom in Hamden, Venter reflects on the importance of bringing people together through music. Joined by her brother Josiah Venter and longtime collaborator Adam Chilenski on bass, the duo aims to create an atmosphere of shared experience and celebration. Pariser emphasizes the transformative power of music to uplift and connect individuals, fostering a sense of unity amidst life’s everyday challenges.

In a world marked by the ordinary and mundane, Goodnight Moonshine seeks to find beauty and meaning in the fleeting moments of life, honoring the richness and complexity of human experience. Their music reminds us to pause, reflect, and appreciate the beauty that surrounds us, even in the midst of chaos and uncertainty. Through their heartfelt lyrics and soulful melodies, Venter and Pariser invite listeners to join them on a journey of self-discovery and connection, where every note is a testament to the enduring power of music to comfort, inspire, and unite us all.
