In 2024, a collaboration between the Messthetics and James Brandon Lewis resulted in a self-titled album, showcasing the unique blend of jazz and rock. The Messthetics, consisting of former Fugazi members Joe Lally and Brendan Canty along with guitarist Anthony Pirog, joined forces with acclaimed saxophonist James Brandon Lewis to create a lively and experimental LP that caught the attention of music enthusiasts. Following the release of the album, Lewis pursued his solo endeavors with the 2025 album “Apple Cores,” while Canty delved into a project titled “Second” alongside sound artist Stephen Vitiello and violinist Hahn Rowe.

The latest offering from the Messthetics and James Brandon Lewis, titled “Deface The Currency,” builds upon the chemistry and energy forged during their extensive tour in support of their previous record. Lewis expressed in a press release the importance of deepening relationships, drawing an analogy to a well-seasoned cast-iron skillet that improves with each use. This sentiment is reflected in the urgency and vitality heard throughout the upcoming album.

The lead single “Gestations” exemplifies the distinctive sound that sets this group apart. A jazz instrumental that seamlessly blends discordant elements with traditional jazz motifs, the track allows room for each member to shine. With Joe Lally and Brendan Canty laying down a bumpy groove and leaving ample space for James Brandon Lewis and Anthony Pirog to showcase their musical prowess, the band occasionally builds up to heavy riff-rock climaxes that captivate listeners. The accompanying music video for “Gestations,” co-directed by Canty and Robin Bell, offers a visual representation of the group’s dynamic and eclectic sound.

Looking ahead, the Messthetics and James Brandon Lewis have announced a series of tour dates in support of “Deface The Currency.” From Portland to Washington D.C., the band will bring their electrifying live performances to various cities, offering fans the opportunity to experience their genre-defying music firsthand. With a tracklist featuring songs like “30 Years Of Knowing” and “Universal Security,” the album promises a captivating exploration of sound and energy that is sure to resonate with audiences.

“Deface The Currency” is set to be released on Impulse! Records on February 20th, marking the next chapter in the collaborative journey between the Messthetics and James Brandon Lewis. As the band prepares to hit the road and share their music with fans around the country, anticipation is high for what promises to be a thrilling and unforgettable musical experience.
