Pavement, indie rock icons, to perform at the Agora in July
Pavement, the renowned indie rock band from the 90s, will grace the stage of the Agora on Thursday, July 23, marking their first performance in Cleveland in three decades. Fans can get their hands on tickets starting at 10 a.m. on Friday, January 16. Hailing from Stockton, California, the band was established in 1989 and quickly gained recognition for their witty and sarcastic lyrics delivered by singer-songwriter-guitarist Steven Malkmus. Their distinct guitar-driven sound, characterized by a laid-back and somewhat chaotic vibe, solidified their status as musical pioneers of the “slacker generation.”
Throughout their career, Pavement released numerous EPs and albums, such as “Slanted and Enchanted,” “Wowie Zowie,” and “Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain,” with the latter featuring their most notable alternative rock radio hit, “Cut Your Hair.” After the quiet disbandment in 1999 following the release of “Twilight Terror,” Malkmus and the group briefly reunited for performances in 2010. However, they soon disbanded again, with Malkmus stating that they would not be recording any new music in the future.
Despite this announcement, Pavement surprised fans in the 2020s by hitting the road once more, releasing a new single, and hinting at the possibility of creating a new album. In 2024, the band took a creative turn by releasing an experimental documentary and concert film titled “Pavements,” which was accompanied by a fitting soundtrack.
The news of Pavement’s upcoming performance at the Agora has sparked excitement among fans who have been eagerly anticipating the band’s return to the stage. With their unique blend of clever lyrics and distinctive sound, Pavement continues to captivate audiences and solidify their place in the indie rock scene.
