Ruffalo, Sykes, Grande wear anti-ICE pins at Golden Globes

Celebrities Mark Ruffalo, Wanda Sykes, and Ariana Grande made a strong statement against ICE at the Golden Globes by wearing anti-ICE pins in honor of Renee Good, an anti-ICE protester who was tragically killed by an ICE agent in Minnesota.

The organizers behind the anti-ICE pins, including Nelini Stamp of Working Families Power and Jess Morales Rocketto of Latino advocacy group Maremoto, designed two pins for the occasion. One pin bore the message “Be Good,” while the other stated “ICE OUT.” Ruffalo was seen donning the “Be Good” pin on his coat as he walked the red carpet, with Sykes and Natasha Lyonne following suit. Grande and Jean Smart proudly wore the pins during the award ceremony, with Smart even pinning the “Be Good” button onto her dress as she accepted her award for best performance by a female actor in a musical or comedy series.

Stamp emphasized the importance of various sectors of society, including artists and entertainers, speaking out on such issues. She stressed the need for everyone to come together to advocate for change. This method of using celebrities to raise awareness for causes is not new, as seen in the 2018 Golden Globes where many actresses sported black attire and “Times Up” pins, shedding light on the prevalent issue of sexual harassment in the industry.

Stamp also pointed out the tradition of artists taking a stand for justice throughout history, highlighting the importance of continuing this tradition. Beyond honoring Good’s memory, the pins also aimed to draw attention to the death of Keith Porter, who was fatally shot by an off-duty ICE officer in Los Angeles. Porter lost his life on New Year’s Eve after firing celebratory shots with an AR-15 style rifle.

Following Good’s tragic death, anti-ICE protests have intensified across the nation. While an FBI investigation into the incident is ongoing, the Trump administration has defended the ICE agent, asserting that he acted in self-defense. Vice President JD Vance even reposted a video of the incident multiple times, criticizing media coverage for alleged dishonesty about the officer involved.

In response to recent events, the outpouring of support at the Golden Globes reflects a growing momentum in societal activism. By using their platform to advocate for change, celebrities like Ruffalo, Sykes, and Grande send a powerful message of solidarity and action against injustices perpetuated by ICE. Through these public displays, awareness is raised, sparking dialogue and inspiring others to join the fight for justice and reform.
