RusT introduces a new way of life in Romania’s shoegaze underground

RusT has recently released “New Way Of Life,” a track that signifies a significant shift in Romania’s shoegaze underground scene. The band describes the song as a step towards a new musical direction without making any bold declarations. Instead, the track unfolds gradually with thick layers of distortion, deliberate drum beats, and introspective lyrics.

RusT’s music falls under the shoegaze and alternative rock genres, with influences of grungegaze. The band came together in early 2024 when high school friends Mateis and Andrei decided to form a band at their guitar club. Despite the lack of a well-defined shoegaze scene in Bucharest, the band draws influences from online communities, personal listening preferences, and old records rather than local trends.

Bucharest’s cultural isolation allows RusT to create music that remains unaffected by external influences, offering them the freedom to explore their unique sound. The city subtly infuses itself into their music through its late nights, concrete landscapes, and a sense of detachment from mainstream culture.

“New Way Of Life” draws inspiration from David Lynch’s films, particularly the Twin Peaks series, embodying a surreal yet beautiful aesthetic. The track’s origin story traces back to bassist Andrei’s experience of listening to “Dance of the Dream Man” while surrounded by fireflies in the dark mountains, which eventually led to the creation of the song’s main riff.

The song’s lyrics complement its introspective sound, serving as a reflection rather than a narrative. Released through the Bucharest-based label Burning Bridges, the track is part of the band’s plan to continue releasing new material in 2026 and possibly expand their reach beyond Romania. The lineup of RusT includes members who skillfully balance volume and restraint, allowing their music to feel both expansive and intimate.
