Fleetwood Mac’s ‘Landslide’ makes debut on charts due to Netflix series
Fleetwood Mac’s beloved hit “Landslide” has recently made its debut on the Billboard Hot 100, thanks to its prominent feature in the finale of the popular Netflix series “Stranger Things.” The song, originally released back in 1975, has resonated once again with modern audiences, marking a remarkable 50-year gap between its initial release and its debut on the Billboard chart.
According to Billboard, “Landslide” entered the charts at No. 41 on the Hot 100 chart dated Jan. 17. The song saw a significant increase in its streaming numbers, with 7 million official U.S. streams, marking a 43% increase week over week. Additionally, the song garnered 888,000 radio audience impressions, indicating a 10% increase, and sold 1,000 downloads, reflecting a 15% rise over the period between Jan. 2 and 8. This surge in popularity can be directly attributed to its prominent placement and emotional resonance within the “Stranger Things” series finale, which was released on Dec. 31.
Originally featured on Fleetwood Mac’s self-titled 10th studio album, with vocals by the iconic Stevie Nicks, “Landslide” was never officially released as a single during its original run. However, a live version of the song was released as a single in 1997, making its debut on the Hot 100 in July 1998 and peaking at No. 51. Over the years, cover versions of “Landslide” by other artists have also achieved chart success, including The Chicks’ version in 2003, peaking at No. 7, and a rendition sung by Gwyneth Paltrow on “Glee” in 2011, which reached No. 23 on the charts.
Notably, Fleetwood Mac has had 26 entries on the Hot 100, spanning across five different decades from the ’70s to the ’20s. This resurgence of “Landslide” mirrors the band’s previous experience when their 1977 hit, “Dreams,” re-entered the Hot 100 in 2020 following a viral TikTok video, ultimately peaking at No. 12 in October of that year.
