With Crooked Stile, Barratt delivers a sticky, fun, genre-blurring dance album that sits well in his catalog that is full of sticky, fun, genre-blurring dance tracks. The man has his own sound, a mix of house, acid, and technoid techno. With this album, he proves he still has a lot to say and plenty of fresh ways to say it.
Moved to a campground near the Wythenshnnette district of Manchester, Shaking Hand formed back in late spring of 2023, sipped a lot of coffee, and a large account of red wine, and began writing and sharing songs among them to finish off a few months later with their debut record. The band consists of Cavegirl (vocalist and bassist), full-time publican Slim Twig aka Paul “The Iron Lung” Cavalier (drummer), and Radiobaron (guitarist) and they say ‘the journey so far has been surprising and exciting’.
Shaking Hand is a band firmly rooted in the post-rock genre, but there are so many layers to dive into here. Some songs touch upon drone and Shoegaze, others feel Japancore punk tunes from the early ’70s that saw sequined maids waltz alongside Lemon Kittens and Young Marble Giants records. And there is a left field in European compositional conundrums there also. For not wanting to turn into an over-intellectual and over-referential arty farty’s band, Shaking Hand certainly have some tales that span a broad musical and existential spectrum.
They recently release their debut album, tited Miserysouvenirinconfusion which they define as “Pop, Political, Neofolk, Altrock, Mathrock, Psychlogical Indie (Psychedelical sounds meets Post-90s eastern Europe shamanism). Shaking Hand is a band that you will have to listen to again and again to fully grasp and comprehend.
