MTV wrapped up its broadcasting journey on December 31st, 2025, marking the end of an era that had a profound impact on many individuals, including myself. Reflecting on my experiences growing up, I can’t help but acknowledge the significant role that MTV played in shaping my youth.

Back in the day, I resided in Sarpsborg, Norway, one of the first places outside of Oslo to receive the MTV and Super Channel broadcasts courtesy of Janco Kabel TV. At the tender age of 15, I, along with my 12-year-old sister, found ourselves at the heart of MTV’s prime target audience – young, enthusiastic about music, and eager to stay current with the latest trends in pop culture.

In a town devoid of live music experiences, where only cover bands made an appearance, my sister and I, along with our circle of friends, made the living room our sanctuary. Gathered around the TV, we immersed ourselves in the captivating world of pop culture, with music videos and fashion trends becoming our daily obsession. Sacrificing sleep, school grades, and family dinners became trivial in comparison to the allure of MTV’s offerings.

MTV introduced us to the concept that “commercials were cool,” a notion we had never encountered before. Whether we were chanting along to car advertisements or mimicking hair gel commercials, we were unwittingly transformed into enthusiastic consumers, singing along and embracing the commercialized culture of the time.

Transitioning from commercials to music, the early-to-mid-80s witnessed a significant surge in pop music, with MTV playing a pivotal role in catapulting bands to stardom. Bands like The Human League, Duran Duran, and Ultravox credit their success to the exposure they received through music videos on MTV. Alternative Nation, Away From The Pulsebeat, and 120 Minutes were just a few of the shows that provided a platform for musicians and viewers alike, exposing them to a diverse range of musical talent.

For many of us, especially in a place like Norway, MTV became a gateway to the world of music and fashion, broadening our horizons and introducing us to new artists and styles. It was a cultural phenomenon that transcended boundaries and left an indelible mark on those of us coming of age during that time.

The arrival of social media and YouTube gradually diminished MTV’s relevance over the years, with reality shows and non-music content taking center stage. Despite its eventual decline, the first 15 years of MTV’s existence were nothing short of iconic, defining an entire generation and revolutionizing the music industry in ways that continue to resonate today.

Looking back on those formative years, the memories of MTV remain etched in my mind, serving as a reminder of a bygone era marked by vibrant colors, bold fashion choices, and a musical landscape that was forever altered by the advent of this groundbreaking channel. Ultimately, the legacy of MTV lives on, transcending generations and leaving an enduring imprint on popular culture as we know it.
