Congress to investigate Minnesota fraud following new allegations

Congress is set to investigate allegations of fraud in Minnesota following a viral video that exposed fraudulent activities in daycare centers in the state. The Trump administration quickly responded, announcing a pause in funding for federal daycare subsidies in Minnesota. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials were dispatched to investigate the allegations, particularly since many of the individuals involved in the fraud are part of the Somali community.

Governor Jim Walz faced criticism for allowing the fraud to persist, leading to his withdrawal from the governor’s race. Additionally, the Department of Homeland Security terminated Somalia’s Temporary Protected Status designation, effective March 17, 2026. President Trump highlighted the significant amount of missing funds in Minnesota, largely attributed to individuals from the Somali community.

Acting Director of ICE, Todd Lyons, revealed that $9 billion in fraud prompted Homeland Security Investigations agents to focus on Minneapolis. The goal remains to hold individuals accountable for the misappropriated taxpayer funds. Social media influencer Nick Shirley released a video uncovering discrepancies in non-emergency medical transportation services subsidized by taxpayers. Shirley’s findings will be presented to Congress during a hearing addressing fraud and the misuse of taxpayer dollars.

During a previous hearing on Minnesota fraud, Democrats accused Republicans of targeting alleged fraud by Somali Americans while overlooking other instances of fraud, including within the White House. The largest COVID fraud scandal in the country, involving a group known as Feeding our Future, and investigations into autism centers in Minnesota are also under scrutiny.

Looking ahead, Wednesday’s congressional hearing is expected to delve into these various fraud allegations, including those related to the transportation industry and the misuse of public funds. The FBI’s investigations into autism centers and the Feeding our Future scandal are expected to be discussed as well.
