Greenland issues guidelines for ‘crisis insurance policy’ amid looming Trump threat
Greenland’s government has introduced a new set of guidelines to assist the population in coping with a potential “crisis” amid threats from US President Donald Trump to annex the territory from Denmark. The brochure advises citizens to prepare by stockpiling essential supplies such as food, water, hunting weapons, and ammunition as a precautionary measure.
Self-Sufficiency Minister Peter Borg described the brochure as “an insurance policy” during a press conference in Nuuk, Greenland’s capital. Although Borg mentioned that they don’t anticipate needing to implement the measures outlined, it serves as a proacti precautionaryary measure. Meanwhile, Trump has expressed his desire to initiate discussions regarding Greenland’s control but assured that he wouldn’t resort to military action to secure the territory.
The handbook, “Prepared for Crises — Be Self-Sufficient for Five Days”, was developed last year primarily in response to persistent power outages of varying lengths within Greenland. It suggests storing a five-day supply of food, three liters of water per person daily, toilet paper, a battery-operated radio, and basic survival gear like weapons, ammunition, and fishing equipment. Greenland, home to a population of 57,000, primarily consisting of around 90 percent indigenous Inuit people, has deep-rooted traditions of hunting and fishing for sustenance.
While Greenland’s Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen alluded to the improbability of a military intervention, he emphasized the necessity for the autonomous Danish territory to be prepared for any eventuality. Trump’s interest in acquiring Greenland stems from geopolitical concerns related to countering Russian and Chinese influence in the Arctic to safeguard global stability, which has been met with apprehension from European and NATO allies.
Despite his keenness to negotiate acquiring the island, Trump has assured that force would not be utilized in the process. A survey conducted in January 2025 revealed that 85 percent of Greenlanders oppose the idea of joining the United States, with only six percent in favor of such a proposition.
