US Treasury Secretary accuses Federal Reserve Chair of ‘politicizing’ central bank

Amid accusations of fraud, the US Treasury Secretary, Scott Bessent, has pointed fingers at Federal Reserve Chairman, Jerome Powell, for allegedly “politicising” the central bank. The pressure on the central bank has escalated after President Donald Trump criticized Powell for being slow to reduce interest rates. Earlier this month, Powell disclosed that the Justice Department had initiated an investigation into him, which past Fed chairs viewed as an attempt to undermine the bank’s autonomy.

During a meeting at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Bessent criticized Powell for planning to attend a Supreme Court hearing regarding Trump’s move to dismiss Fed Governor Lisa Cook. Bessent saw Powell’s attendance as a political stance and questioned why Powell supported Cook without the Fed conducting an investigation into the mortgage fraud allegations against her, which Cook has denied. Bessent emphasized the importance of keeping the Fed free from political influences and voiced concerns about Powell’s actions.

President Trump has based his effort to remove Cook, the first Black woman on the Fed’s board of governors, on allegations of mortgage fraud. Although Cook challenged her dismissal, the Supreme Court allowed her to retain her position until her case is heard. Despite not being charged with a crime, Trump persistently criticizes Powell for impeding his goals, claiming that current Fed policies hinder his success. Trump hinted at announcing a new Fed chairman in the near future as Powell’s term concludes in May.

Recently, Powell disclosed that US prosecutors had initiated an inquiry into him over an ongoing renovation project at the Fed’s headquarters. The investigation revolves around testimony Powell provided last summer about the remodeling, resulting in prosecutors issuing subpoenas and threatening a criminal indictment. Powell believes this inquiry is politically motivated to influence the central bank’s interest rate decisions, and numerous heads of major central banks have supported him against these allegations.

Trump has indicated that he will evaluate Powell’s successor based on their willingness to promptly reduce interest rates. Amidst ongoing tensions between the administration and the central bank, the accusations and investigations surrounding Powell have added fuel to the fire. The independence and integrity of the Federal Reserve have been called into question as various political and personal interests clash within the institution.
