Snail Mail has recently unveiled details about her upcoming album, Ricochet, set to release on March 27 through Matador Records. After a brief hiatus following her 2021 album, Valentine, Lindsey Jordan returns with a fresh perspective, delving into deeper themes beyond the realm of romantic relationships and focusing more on the fleeting nature of time.

The lead single from the album, “Dead End,” showcases Snail Mail’s signature alt-rock sound while reflecting on the complexities of suburban youth. Characterized by layered distorted guitars and a driving lead melody, the track builds tension gradually before breaking into a memorable, anthemic refrain. The accompanying music video, co-directed by Jordan and Elsie Richter, captures a sense of uneasy nostalgia with its guerrilla-style footage shot in rural North Carolina during a chilly night, portraying moments of freedom punctuated by the intrusion of authority.

Created during a period of personal upheaval that saw Jordan move from New York City to North Carolina, Ricochet sees the artist grappling with existential questions about mortality, distance, and the disconcerting reality that life moves forward even amidst personal turmoil. The album showcases a departure from previous work, incorporating elaborate arrangements and a nod to ’90s alt-rock influences, infusing elements of grunge and shoegaze with the emotional depth that defined her earlier albums.

Recorded with producer and bassist Aron Kobayashi Ritch at Fidelitorium Recordings in North Carolina and studios in Brooklyn, Ricochet showcases a more polished vocal delivery from Jordan, following a period of recovery and speech therapy post the Valentine tour. Support for the album will include a North American tour commencing on April 10 in Milwaukee and featuring dates at iconic venues like the Brooklyn Paramount and The Wiltern in Los Angeles.

With songs like “Tractor Beam,” “Butterfly,” and “Reverie” on the Ricochet tracklist, Snail Mail promises a diverse and introspective musical journey for listeners. The album’s expansion in sound and thematic depth hints at Jordan’s evolution as an artist, offering a unique blend of introspection and sonic experimentation that sets the stage for an eagerly anticipated release.
