Rock Festival returning to San Ginés festivities this year
The upcoming San Ginés Rock Festival, part of the celebrated San Ginés festivities, is set to return to the public after a period of absence. This event is being revived thanks to collaborative efforts by the Arrecife City Council’s Department of Youth, the Musical and Cultural Association ‘El Hoyo Sónico,’ and the sancocho.com webzine. The Festival has a rich history stretching back twenty-five years and will take place on August 12, 13, and 14 at the Fairgrounds’ esplanade.
An exciting feature of this year’s San Ginés Rock Festival is a significant representation of local bands from Lanzarote who will bring their unique flair and original music on stage. While the focus is on local talent, there will also be performances from musicians hailing from other regions. The lineup includes renowned local bands like Galiot, Metalmorfosis, Blackened, Pechuga Band, iMtiMa, Satán El Católiko, and Los Verbenas. Bands from Tenerife such as Dead Crooners, Guerrilla Urbana, and Brutalizzed Kidsm will also grace the festival, adding depth to the diverse musical experience. Notable groups outside the Canary Islands, like Kabbalah from Navarra and Evil Impulse from Ciudad Real, will contribute to the festival’s vibrancy.
In honor of the Festival’s landmark twenty-fifth edition, a public competition was held for the design of the festival poster, which was won by Begoña Izarra. Additionally, a photography contest will occur during the Festival days, with the support of AHL Informatica, Pura Madre, Bar Asturias, and Biosfera TV. These initiatives aim to enrich the Festival experience and engage attendees in various artistic expressions.
Youth representative from Arrecife, highlighted the importance of returning the Festival to its roots in the 90s when it was a beacon for local bands. The revival of this tradition is a collaborative effort aimed at providing a platform for local artists to showcase their talent and contribute to the vibrant music scene on the island. This revival will breathe new life into one of the oldest music festivals in the Canary Islands.
Jonás Martín, a representative of ‘El Hoyo Sónico,’ shared insights about how the Association was established to reinvigorate the local rock scene which had faced challenges in recent years. The group, composed of musicians, composers, journalists, photographers, and music enthusiasts, aims to preserve traditions like the San Ginés Rock Festival and promote local musical talent. The association plans to organize various activities, including concerts, recitals, exhibitions, and collaborations with different arts and music-related groups to nurture a thriving rock music community on the island.
