Charleston arts events honor Black History Month at Dock Street Theatre
The Friends of MOJA have organized two unique art events at the historic Dock Street Theatre in Charleston, South Carolina, in early February. These events aim to celebrate local talent and pay respect to musical legends in honor of Black History Month.
The first event, titled “Roots of a Renaissance,” will take place on February 9 at the Dock Street Theatre. Charleston Poet Laureate, A$iahMae, will showcase new pieces alongside other local poets, accompanied by a live jazz trio. The evening will also include an exhibit featuring works from the festival’s previous three poster designers and visual artists.
Charlton Singleton, a Grammy Award-winning artist and the festival’s artistic director, praised A$iahMae’s work, describing it as powerful and thought-provoking. According to Singleton, her pieces are entertaining, insightful, and exceptionally well-crafted.
The second event, “Amazing Grace: The Aretha Franklin Experience,” is scheduled for February 10 at the same location. Vocalist Javetta Campbell from North Charleston will channel the spirit of Aretha Franklin by performing the iconic “Amazing Grace” with The Lowcountry Voices. Backed by a talented ensemble of local musicians, Campbell, who has released multiple albums and singles, will bring Franklin’s timeless classic to life on stage.
“Amazing Grace” holds the title of the best-selling live gospel album of all time. The original recording featured Franklin and James Cleveland, a revered figure in the gospel music scene.
The events are part of the MOJA Arts Festival, a longstanding cultural celebration that has been running for over four decades. While the main festival is set to take place from September 24 to October 4, the upcoming February performances offer a unique opportunity to spotlight local talent and honor Black History Month.
Singleton emphasized the importance of recognizing and appreciating the exceptional talent present in the Lowcountry. He expressed pride in the region’s artists and believes that showcasing their skills is essential, especially during dedicated events like those scheduled for February.
