New beach barbecue boats available for reservation in Marbella
Marbella is revamping its beach barbecue boats, or “barcas de moragas,” with a new artistic design to create a cohesive and recognizable visual identity inspired by the local maritime heritage. Local artist Curro Leyton, known for his deep ties to Marbella, has been tasked with creating unique designs for these traditional boat-shaped barbecues.
These barcas were previously painted blue in Marbella and red and black in San Pedro Alcantara. The new designs will feature marine-inspired motifs and landscapes, using vibrant colors and a modern cubist style to provide a fresh and appealing aesthetic that reflects the beauty of the surrounding beaches.
A total of ten barcas will be placed in San Pedro Alcantara, 12 in Marbella (mainly at Playa del Cable), one in Nueva Andalucia at El Rodeito, and one in Las Chapas at Playa de La Víbora. Before painting, each boat undergoes a complete restoration process to ensure durability, protection from the marine environment, and a suitable surface for the artwork.
To reserve a Barca de Moraga for your beach barbecue, you can do so for free through the official Ayuntamiento de Marbella website. These public facilities are available in select areas for evening barbecues, where visitors can bring their own food, charcoal/wood, and equipment.
The barca reservation process involves selecting your preferred zone from locations like Playa del Cable in Marbella, Playa de La Víbora in Las Chapas, El Rodeíto in Nueva Andalucia, and La Salida in San Pedro Alcantara. During the summer months, these spots are open from around 8 pm to 1 am, with some availability year-round in specific areas.
Booking a barca requires a minimum of three days’ advance notice and can be done up to 60 days in advance. Adults or responsible parties must make the reservation, and guests are required to clean up after themselves, avoid using glass, and adhere to fire safety regulations.
The reservation process involves visiting the official website, selecting your zone, completing the online form with your details, and submitting the request. Upon approval, you will receive confirmation via email with instructions and rules to follow for your moraga.
Due to high demand, these spots fill up quickly, especially as the weather warms up. It is advisable to book early, bring necessary items such as trash bags and lighting, and follow all safety guidelines for a fun and safe moraga experience.
