While boiling water is a good method to eliminate harmful microorganisms, it may not remove all contaminants. It is crucial to ensure proper sanitation by bringing water to a rolling boil for a minimum of one minute and allowing it to cool before use. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) emphasizes that boiling water effectively kills disease-causing microorganisms, but it does not eliminate heavy metals, salts, or certain chemicals.

When water is cloudy or discolored, disinfection methods may be less effective. In such cases, allowing the water to settle and filtering it through a clean cloth, paper towel, or coffee filter can help. If boiled water is not available, bottled water can be used for various common activities like drinking, preparing food, washing dishes, and filling pet bowls.

In order to improve the taste of boiled water, the EPA suggests adding a small amount of salt per quart or liter of water or transferring the water between clean containers a few times. In situations where boiling water is not feasible and bottled water is unavailable, unscented chlorine bleach with a sodium hypochlorite concentration of 6-8.25% can be used for water disinfection. It is essential to follow the instructions on the bleach label and avoid using bleach with added cleaners. If the water appears cloudy, it should be filtered after settling before adding bleach.

A helpful guideline provided by the EPA outlines the amount of bleach needed per gallon of water, doubling the quantity if the water is cloudy, colored, or very cold. After adding bleach, the water should be stirred and left to stand for 30 minutes until a mild chlorine odor is noticeable. If there is no smell, the process should be repeated and the water should stand for an additional 15 minutes before use. If the chlorine taste is too strong, the water can be transferred between containers and allowed to stand for a few hours to reduce the taste.
