Chuck Negron, co-founder of Three Dog Night, passes away at 83 following health struggle
Chuck Negron, a key figure in the formation of the renowned rock band Three Dog Night, passed away at the age of 83. The talented singer breathed his last at his residence in Studio City, CA, surrounded by his loved ones. Suffering from heart failure and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease for three decades, Negron battled health issues up until his final moments.
In 1967, Negron, Cory Wells (who passed away in 2015), and Danny Hutton laid the foundation for what would later become Three Dog Night, originally named Redwood. The band soared to fame with hits like “Joy to the World,” “Mama Told Me (Not to Come),” and “Black and White,” securing an impressive 11 top 10 hits on the Billboard 100 chart and 21 top 40 hits.
Hailing from the Bronx, Negron ventured into a solo career post-1985 following struggles with substance abuse that led to a stint in a California rehabilitation facility in 1991. His battle with drug addiction, which once saw him spending $2,000 daily on drugs, took him to Skid Row at one point. Despite his personal struggles, Negron released various solo records from 1995 to 2007, although his health concerns impacted his performing abilities.
In a 2018 interview with Rock Cellar Magazine, Negron reflected on how his struggle with COPD nearly prevented him from continuing to perform live. The necessity of wearing specialized oxygen-providing glasses became crucial for him amid his health ordeal, prompting him to acknowledge the significant impact it had on his career trajectory.
