Introducing Eric Steckel: A Blues Guitarist With a High-Gain Firebrand Style

Every modern guitarist from Joe Bonamassa to Jared James Nichols faces criticism that their playing is just pentatonic. Eric Steckel, however, is a unique high-gain firebrand in the blues guitar world, bringing heavy distortion and a new approach to the genre that sets him apart from the rest.

Over the years, Eric Steckel has cultivated an international following by infusing his blues guitar with a dose of heavy distortion and bending the traditional blues sound to fit his artistic vision. His journey began at an early age when he stepped onstage at 11 and was later invited to play with John Mayall & the Bluesbreakers. These early experiences paved the way for Steckel to develop his style and ultimately launch a successful solo career.

Steckel’s recent performances exhibit a more aggressive and fiery side of his blues guitar playing, a departure from his earlier work. Embracing heavier tones and searing fretwork, Steckel has attracted a new wave of fans who appreciate his raw and powerful sound. Reflecting on his evolution as an artist, Steckel acknowledges the impact of the pandemic on his recent growth, with several of his videos going viral and garnering widespread attention.

Inspired by the music of Gary Moore, Steckel embarked on a journey to play with more intensity and gain, breaking free from traditional blues conventions. Moore’s fearless approach to the genre, characterized by a rebellious and unapologetic style, motivated Steckel to push the boundaries of his own playing and embrace a heavier sound. This shift in his musical direction is evident in his 2018 album, “Polyphonic Prayer,” where he fully embraced high-gain tones and set a new course for his artistic expression.

Transitioning to heavier playing required Steckel to explore new gear and equipment, including his first Knaggs six-string guitar. Impressed by his online performances, the guitar company approached him to collaborate on a signature model, establishing a lasting partnership. Additionally, Steckel worked with Italian specialists Mezzabara to create his own custom amp, further refining his unique tone and sound.

Looking ahead, Steckel is set to release a new album with a new label, marking yet another milestone in his career. Despite his rising success, Steckel remains grounded in his artistic vision, focusing on his distinctive playing style and unique approach to the blues. With signature guitars, a select pedalboard, and a commitment to pushing the boundaries of traditional blues guitar, Steckel continues to redefine the genre and captivate audiences worldwide.
