British guitar virtuoso Sophie Lloyd, whose rise to fame as a YouTuber led to playing with Machine Gun Kelly (mgk), recently opened up about her battle with performance anxiety. Lloyd, known for her captivating instrumental arrangements spanning from Muse to Britney Spears, garnered a massive following of 1.3 million subscribers on YouTube. Her solo career hit new heights when her debut show at the Whisky A-Go-Go sold out within minutes.

In a candid interview with Premier Guitar, Lloyd shared how her involvement with mgk’s band helped her confront her anxiety head-on. The journey that started with a random direct message ultimately became a transformative experience for the British shredder.

Recounting her struggles during the COVID-19 pandemic, Lloyd revealed how the lockdown provided relief from performing in front of live audiences. She confessed that she used to avoid live gigs due to crippling anxiety and found solace in performing behind a camera on platforms like Twitch. However, her path took a significant turn when she joined mgk in 2022 for his Mainstream Sellout world tour.

Transitioning from playing to small crowds of 50 people to rocking arenas packed with 13,000 fans was a surreal leap for Lloyd. The experience presented an empowering moment where Lloyd knew she belonged on the big stage. Despite the initial nerves and apprehension, she tapped into her inner strength to deliver breathtaking performances alongside mgk.

Reflecting on her journey, Lloyd disclosed that she has conquered much of her performance anxiety, thanks to her involvement with mgk and other significant events. From playing in front of 80,000 people at the Women’s Rugby World Cup final in Twickenham to headlining her own sold-out show, Lloyd exuded newfound confidence and poise on stage. While acknowledging that occasional nerves still surface, she shared that she has largely overcome her anxiety.
