New video footage released from day of fatal shooting at Brown University
Newly released video footage from the tragic event at Brown University that resulted in the death of two students and injuries to nine others provides a closer look at the harrowing incident that shook the community. The city of Providence, Rhode Island, revealed the videos from the day of the shooting, assuring the public that they had redacted the most distressing and violent scenes to protect the victims and maintain the trust of the community.
Providence Mayor Brett Smiley emphasized the importance of transparency, accountability, and compliance with the state’s Access to Public Records Act while acknowledging the potential harm and trauma the footage could inflict on the victims, their families, and neighbors as they continue to heal and recover from the tragedy.
Media outlets from various regions had been seeking access to body camera footage, audio recordings, and other public records following the mid-December shooting. The city finally released these materials on Monday, respecting the families’ wishes to wait until after a memorial service took place on Brown’s campus.
On December 13, Claudio Neves Valente, a 48-year-old gunman, entered a study session in a Brown academic building, unleashing a hail of bullets on students. His gunfire claimed the lives of 19-year-old sophomore Ella Cook and 18-year-old freshman MukhammadAziz Umurzokov, and left nine others wounded. Just two days later, Neves Valente, a former graduate student at Brown in the early 2000s studying physics, fatally shot Massachusetts Institute of Technology professor Nuno F.G. Loureiro at his residence near Boston.
Neves Valente, who shared a past with Loureiro in Portugal during their school years in the 1990s, was later found dead in a New Hampshire storage facility. The Department of Justice revealed that he had meticulously planned the attacks for years, leaving behind incriminating videos in which he confessed to the murders without providing a clear motive. The FBI recovered these videos from an electronic device at the storage facility where Neves Valente’s lifeless body was discovered.
Despite the tragic events that unfolded at Brown University, authorities are working tirelessly to ensure transparency and accountability while supporting the affected individuals and the community as a whole. The release of the footage sheds light on the chaos and devastation of that fateful day, offering a glimpse into the horrific reality of gun violence and its lasting impact on the lives of innocent bystanders.
