Monroe City Schools Committee progresses Virtual Reality technology in classrooms
The Monroe City School Curriculum Committee has given the green light to a groundbreaking new program that introduces virtual reality technology to the classroom. According to Kody Chase, the Career and Technical Coordinator for Monroe City Schools, the primary goal of this initiative is to introduce students to potential career opportunities beyond high school. While the program is primarily targeted towards middle school students, Board Member Jennifer Hanline expressed concerns about the limited scope of the initiative. Although she supports the program, she emphasized the importance of also incorporating virtual reality technology into high schools where it may be more relevant. Hanline believes that expanding the program to high school students would ensure adequate exposure to a wider range of students.
Community Member Vickie Krutzer also raised questions about the allocation of resources, pointing out that the program comes with a price tag of $90,000. With the current plan reaching only 30 to 40 students per junior high school, Krutzer expressed hopes for the expansion of the program to benefit a larger number of students. She emphasized the need to maximize the impact of federal funds by extending the program to reach a greater student population.
Despite these concerns, the Monroe City School Curriculum Committee proceeded to approve a total of eight projects, totaling more than $500,000 in funding. These projects, including the virtual reality technology initiative, are now awaiting final approval from the school board, with a decision expected to be made on Wednesday.
