Local band draws inspiration from historic Kile Oak for new album

Tucked away on a quiet street in Irvington, nestled between two houses, stands the Kile Oak, an 85-foot-tall bur oak that has been estimated to be around 450 years old, predating the establishment of the United States. Named after Reverend Oliver Kile, this ancient tree has now served as the inspiration for a new album by the local band Ultimate Dog.

Ultimate Dog, a three-member psychedelic rock band, will be launching their album “The Reverend Kile Oak” at a release party at the State Street Pub on February 25. The band members, including Irvington resident Matt McDonald, found the tree to be a striking landmark in their neighborhood that held a sense of mystery and allure due to its dual reference to both a tree and a person.

The album title was conceived before the songs themselves, with McDonald drawn to the idea of how the Kile Oak could transcend the noise of daily life and remind individuals of something bigger. Standing under a tree that has witnessed centuries of experiences can evoke a sense of connection to those who have come before, a feeling that resonated deeply with the band.

Mr. Bettleman, a character in the album inspired by a disgruntled neighbor who would disrupt the band’s practice sessions by setting off car alarms, adds a narrative element to the album. Field recordings from Irvington, including sounds of trains, frogs, and geese, enhance the immersive experience for listeners, grounding the album in a specific sense of place.

Drummer Jacob Worrell emphasized the importance of creating music from one’s immediate surroundings, noting that their album intentionally captures the essence of Irvington. The upcoming show on February 25 will showcase performances by Afterglow and Stuporwaffles, with all proceeds from the event going towards the preservation of the State Street Pub, a revered live music venue in the city.

Through their music, Ultimate Dog has paid homage to the rich tapestry of experiences and influences in Irvington, weaving together elements of history, community, and everyday life to create a sonic landscape that reflects the spirit of the neighborhood.
