I find it slightly easier to explain John Bonham or someone like Keith Moon. The logistics seem a bit at odds with people who have been in music that long. So it’s quite difficult to explain things to those people.

What have your warmups consisted of?

Sweet nothing. Absolutely nothing. I prefer a glass of wine or a cup of tea to get the throat going. Ideally, it would be coffee, but it could be a glass of water or anything, really. Something that gives you the devil put it in me or it takes the edge off – nothing too dramatic.

Have you been to the site before?

Yeah, it’s lovely there. It’s always a great feeling coming to New York. The apartment is amazing, the town has taken on its own flavor. From the beards to the clothes to the food to the style, everything is New York, so it’s always good. I just love the character of the people there.

There are only so many musicians who can play The Who’s music.

Everything is hard, absolutely. I don’t know how anyone could play The Who. God rest his soul, John [Entwistle] said one day that there must be blood tests before people play to music. I mean, thank God there aren’t, because who could get on that stage? What would you have to be good at to actually play with the guys? God knows. It’s almost as if you’d have to be there. It’s like a script that unfolds. It’s my script, but I have no interest in the script. It just happens.
