U2, the renowned Irish rock band, surprised fans with the release of an EP titled “Days of Ash” on Ash Wednesday. The EP includes a track titled “American Obituary,” a tribute to Renee Good, a brave anti-ICE protester who tragically lost her life after being shot by an ICE agent last month.

The song’s poignant lyrics honor Good as an “American mother of three,” symbolically referencing the three bullets that ended her life – one for each of her orphaned children. Along with the EP release, U2 shared a heartfelt statement from Good’s widow, Becca Good, reflecting on Renee’s compassionate and dignified nature.

“Renee didn’t just believe in kindness; she lived it, fully and fiercely,” Becca Good expressed. “She believed every person deserved the same compassion, care, and dignity regardless of who they were.” The band conveyed that the EP was dedicated to individuals courageously advocating for justice and freedom, embodying U2’s longstanding commitment to making humanitarian statements through their music.

This EP marks U2’s first collection of songs since 2017, and the band emphasized the significance of spreading messages of peace through their artistry, especially in Renee Good’s memory. Good’s parents and siblings shared their gratitude for U2’s impactful tribute, acknowledging the band’s powerful call for unity and social change in light of the country’s pressing challenges.

Recently, two of Good’s siblings took to Capitol Hill to address lawmakers, advocating for reforms in immigration enforcement tactics. Despite the Trump administration’s defense of the ICE agent who fatally shot Good, labelling her as a “domestic terrorist,” her family continues to push for justice and systemic change.

Interestingly, U2’s EP release coincided with Bruce Springsteen’s heartfelt single, “Streets of Minneapolis,” dedicated to both Renee Good and Alex Pretti, another U.S. citizen who tragically lost his life at the hands of ICE agents. This convergence of artistry shedding light on social justice issues reflects the enduring impact of music in amplifying important narratives and advocating for change.

As U2’s latest musical offering resonates with listeners worldwide, it serves as a testament to the power of art in fostering empathy, unity, and social awareness. Through their artistic platform, U2 continues to honor the memory of individuals like Renee Good, whose unwavering commitment to justice and compassion inspires meaningful societal dialogue and action.
