Nolatet to release new album, listen to their latest single
Nolatet has recently announced the forthcoming release of their third album, titled “Somethin’ To Relax With,” set to be released on April 3 via RPF Records/Royal Potato Family. The band features the iconic New Orleans rhythm section of James Singleton on bass and Johnny Vidacovich on drums, alongside renowned improvisers Mike Dillon on vibraphone and percussion and Brian Haas on piano. This album marks their first release since 2018’s “No Revenge Necessary.” The album was recorded live at LowDown in Tulsa during two sold-out shows in 2025, capturing the energy and spontaneity of their performance.
James Singleton explained their unique approach to creating music, stating, “In the past, we’ve always worked out new material live, onstage, in front of the audience. Even after we’ve played a new composition a few times, we always treat this music as rough sketches, no matter how composed it might be. Our specialty is collective improvisation, and as a band we gravitate more toward creative, improvised music than sticking to charts. So when it came time to record these songs, we made the decision to do it live in front of an audience.”
Each member of Nolatet contributes to the composition of their music, leading to a diverse and dynamic sound. Brian Haas shared, “The inspiration to record a new album was all the new pieces we had been writing. The first two albums were made at Esplanade Studios in New Orleans and have a specific live studio sound. This third album was recorded live, and I think the kinetic energy of an audience makes for a more energetic and riskier album.” Their choice to record in Tulsa was influenced by Johnny Vidacovich’s suggestion, as the city embraces unique musicians and avant-garde music, providing the perfect backdrop for their recording.
Known for their eclectic mix of melodies, harmonies, grooves, and punk-rock attitude, Nolatet has garnered critical acclaim for their innovative approach to improvisation and execution. Their new album features six original compositions, showcasing their jazz finesse, syncopation, and harmonic exploration. The tracks “Switchback,” “Doc Richter To You,” and “Black Pencil” highlight the band’s ability to blend traditional jazz elements with contemporary experimentation.
