Hwang first became associated with YES Theatre after being selected as the recipient of the inaugural YES Theatre New Works Commission. This commission required the creation of the first draft of two new musicals, with Way Out There being one of the selected projects. Five years later, the musical is finally hitting the YES main stage.

Way Out There follows the story of Megan and her brother Jason, two teenagers living in White Rock, BC in 1996. Megan is attempting to lead a normal life following their father’s mysterious disappearance, while Jason firmly believes in a radical conspiracy theory that involves their dad being abducted by aliens.

The music for the show is composed by Anton Lipovetsky, a celebrated Canadian composer whose works are currently being performed or workshopped across Canada. The first two releases, Beautiful Lie and Connect the Dots, have already been made available on music streaming platforms such as Spotify and Apple Music.

Lipovetsky highlighted that the musical influences for Way Out There draw from the rock artists of the 90s and 2000s, such as Alanis Morissette, Radiohead, and Green Day. These influences aim to evoke a sense of nostalgia while incorporating elements of sci-fi and mystery to create a unique theatrical experience.

According to Lipovetsky, Way Out There offers a fresh take on musical theatre that breaks stylistic conventions while maintaining a strong focus on storytelling. The support and enthusiasm from YES Theatre have motivated him to take more creative risks and infuse more of his personal style into the music, making the process a joyful one.

Way Out There is set to premiere at the Sudbury Theatre Centre on April 14. For those interested in attending the show, tickets can be purchased through the YES Theatre website. Don’t miss the opportunity to experience this innovative and captivating musical firsthand.
