Inquest reveals two men died moments apart at Cork Ironman event
A Canadian man, Ivan Chittenden, tragically lost his life while competing in an Ironman event in Youghal, Co Cork, in 2023. Ivan, who hailed from Brantford near Toronto, was a dedicated athlete who had started training for Ironman competitions and marathons after the sudden death of his first wife, Dianne Dyer, in 2011. Following this loss, Ivan found love again and married Dr. Siobhan Hyland.
On the fateful day of August 20th, 2023, both Ivan Chittenden and another competitor, Brendan Wall from Cardrath, Co Meath, lost their lives while participating in the 70.3 half Ironman section of the Youghal race. While Ivan passed away due to an accidental head injury, Brendan’s inquest was adjourned for further witness testimonies.
Assistant State Pathologist Dr. Margaret Bolster conducted postmortem examinations on both men and determined that they both died of acute respiratory failure due to drowning. Ivan Chittenden had also sustained a recent head injury which could have impacted his ability to swim. Dr. Bolster mentioned the severity of the bruising on Ivan’s head and indicated that this injury likely led to his unfortunate drowning.
During the inquest, it was revealed that the Ironman event had been canceled the previous day due to unfavorable conditions caused by Storm Betty. Despite this, the event went ahead the next day, albeit with some alterations to the course. John Innes, a volunteer involved in the course design and safety, stated that he deemed the sea conditions safe for the swim to proceed.
Competitor Conor Hillick described the challenging conditions in the water as competitors struggled amidst chaotic circumstances. Colin Ryan, another participant, recounted finding Ivan Chittenden motionless in the water and immediately initiating CPR. Despite their efforts, Ivan was ultimately pronounced dead after an hour of continued resuscitation attempts.
At the onset of the inquest, Coroner Frank O’Connell emphasized that he would focus solely on issues within the scope of the inquiry, refraining from adjudicating on matters between Ironman and Triathlon Ireland. Legal representatives of these organizations were present at the hearing, though no official representatives attended in person.
The inquest shed light on concerns raised by the Wall family’s representative, Ciaran Lewis, who believed that Ironman and Triathlon Ireland should have been physically present at the proceedings. It was revealed that alterations had been made to the swimming course on the day of the event, indicating discrepancies with the permitted course layout approved by Triathlon Ireland.
