The album, as described by Harjo in her extensive liner notes, is a reflection of the tumultuous times communities are navigating. Through her distinctive blend of jazz, prog-rock, grunge, and traditional Native music, Harjo creates a compelling narrative that delves into themes of ancestral memory, collective struggle, and the transformative power of art. Embracing her Muscogee heritage, she explores profound subjects such as matriarchal lineage, social justice, and cultural identity, with a keen awareness of the importance of leaving a resonant artistic legacy for future generations to learn from and be inspired by.

The partnership between Harjo and spalding blossomed from their shared background as recipients of the Art of Change Ford Foundation Fellowships. Their collaborative efforts culminated in the recording of “Insomnia and Seven Steps to Grace” at The Church Studio in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Joined by accomplished musicians Matthew Stevens and Justin Tyson, the album showcases a harmonious blend of spoken word, enchanting melodies, and intricate instrumental arrangements that invite listeners into a contemplative and evocative sonic landscape.

The album’s title track, “Insomnia and Seven Steps to Grace,” opens with ethereal tones and Harjo’s emotive recitation, drawing listeners into a dream-like realm where the panther symbolizes the need for vision and renewal. As the record progresses, it navigates through a dynamic range of emotions and storytelling, from the soulful groove of “Rabbit Is Up to Tricks” to the haunting urgency of “I Pray for My Enemies,” culminating in the contemplative resilience of “Fear Redux.” Along the way, Harjo pays homage to her family legacy, resurrecting her mother’s unreleased composition “My Guy” with a modern jazz reinterpretation that showcases the timeless connection between generations.

In a poignant reflection on the album’s thematic underpinning, Harjo emphasizes that art serves as a transformative conduit for navigating the complexities of life. Through the acknowledgment of both the hardships and beauty that accompany humanity’s shared experience, “Insomnia and Seven Steps to Grace” serves as a poignant testament to the redemptive power of creativity and resilience in the face of adversity.

As Harjo’s musical odyssey unfolds with “Insomnia and Seven Steps to Grace,” listeners are invited to embark on a profound and soul-stirring exploration of history, heritage, and the enduring legacy of artistic expression. With its rich tapestry of sounds and stories, the album stands as a testament to the transformative potential of art to illuminate and inspire in times of darkness.
