Shane Kahalehau, known as the ‘Hawaiian Home Boy’, drops latest album in Maui
Shane Kahalehau, known affectionately as the “Hawaiian Home Boy,” has recently unveiled his latest musical masterpiece, “Ua Ho’okŌ’ia,” symbolizing the realization and culmination of his musical journey. This talented artist, a previous NÄ HÖkÜ Hanohano awardee for his contemporary Hawaiian album “KaonohiokaÌlaÌ„,” is gearing up to premiere his newest creation at the ProArts Playhouse on March 6.
In a recent interview, Kahalehau shared the inspiration behind his latest album, highlighting the significance of his musical roots and personal connections. He spoke of his father’s influence on his musical upbringing, recalling how, at a young age, he learned “Somewhere in Hawaii” on his father’s Martin tenor ukulele. This tribute to his father and the timeless melodies of Hawaiian music serve as the foundation for his latest work.
Drawing from a mix of traditional Hawaiian compositions and personal inspirations, Kahalehau weaves a tapestry of emotions and stories through his music. Songs like “Ki’ipau Chant” by Prince Leleiohoku, the heartfelt “Ku’u ‘Li’ili’i,” and the enchanting “Ka Beauty O Ka Lehua” showcase the depth and diversity of his musical influences. Collaborating with talented musicians like Kevin Brown, Ross Ka’a’a, Arlie Asiu, and Kason Gomes, Kahalehau brings a unique flair to each track, infusing his personal touch into every note.
Further honing his craft, Kahalehau pays homage to his musical mentors and inspirations through his music. He dedicates “Ku’u ‘Li’ili’i” to Uncle Kevin Brown of the Waiehu Sons, a guiding figure in his early musical career. Additionally, his rendition of “Ka Beauty O Ka Lehua,” co-composed by the late Kumu Keli’i Tau’a, sheds light on the profound impact of these influential figures on his artistic journey.
In a nod to his reggae roots, Kahalehau wraps up the album with a moving rendition of Jimmy Cliff’s “Love is All.” Reflecting on his admiration for Cliff’s pioneering spirit and musical legacy, Kahalehau infuses the track with his unique style, supported by the harmonious voices of his two sons.
Transitioning from his reggae background to embrace the rich tapestry of Hawaiian music was a transformative experience for Kahalehau. Despite initial challenges, his deep-rooted connection to his cultural heritage and a desire to honor his ancestors drove him to explore this new musical landscape. Building on the success of his award-winning album “KaonohiokaÌlaÌ„,” Kahalehau delves deeper into his cultural roots, blending tradition with innovation to create a truly captivating musical experience.
As he prepares to showcase his latest creations at the ProArts Playhouse, Kahalehau’s passion for music and commitment to preserving Hawaiian traditions shines through in every melody. With “Ua Ho’okŌ’ia,” Shane Kahalehau invites listeners on a heartfelt journey through the sounds of Hawaii, celebrating the past, present, and future of Hawaiian music.
