Local golfers raise £1500 for charity during a week-long golf trip
Local golf enthusiasts recently came together for a charitable cause, collectively raising £1500 for Maggie’s Lanarkshire during a week-long golf trip. Led by the initiative of Paul Boltom, a group of 24 friends embarked on a heartwarming journey to Belek, Turkey, to combine their passion for golf with a commitment to raising funds for a good cause.
Over the course of the trip, which spanned from November 29 to December 6, participants engaged in six rounds of golf spread across four distinct courses. In addition to showcasing their golfing skills, the group introduced a unique fundraising strategy that added an element of fun and camaraderie to their charitable endeavors. A playful “fine system” was implemented, whereby penalties were imposed for various offenses, ranging from the mundane, such as misplacing a golf ball or making contact with a tree, to the whimsical, like sporting inappropriate attire or daring to show up with hair gel still in place.
Despite the lighthearted nature of the fines, their collective impact was substantial, with every penny collected through these penalties being channeled directly to Maggie’s Lanarkshire. This charitable organization holds a special significance to Lesley Mooney, a member of the group from Carluke, who has benefitted immensely from the support provided by Maggie’s during her battle with breast cancer since her diagnosis in January 2024.
Lesley shared poignant reflections on her experience with Maggie’s, emphasizing the comfort, care, and sense of community that she found within its walls. For her, the center became a sanctuary where she could freely express her fears and seek solace without fear of judgment. From yoga classes to support groups, Maggie’s played a pivotal role in fostering her emotional and physical well-being throughout her cancer journey and beyond, aiding her in navigating the complexities of her post-treatment life.
The generosity and support of the group did not go unnoticed, with Paul expressing pride in their collective decision to back Maggie’s and make a meaningful impact through their shared experience. The weeklong trip became a memorable blend of golfing adventures and philanthropic endeavors, with every participant wholeheartedly embracing the fine system as a means of giving back to their community. Billy McGill, another member closely involved in coordinating the charity efforts, echoed these sentiments, highlighting the joy, laughter, and bond of friendship that accompanied their charitable contributions.
Ultimately, the success of this fundraising effort served as a testament to the group’s spirit of generosity and solidarity. By raising £1500 through a simple yet impactful initiative, these compassionate individuals demonstrated the profound impact that a shared passion for golf and a commitment to giving back can have on their community and those in need.
