Exclusive Interview with Jim Messina: Country Rock Pioneer Discusses Return to Bethel Woods
Jim Messina is a music legend known for his contribution to various supergroups and a successful solo career spanning five decades. From his early days with Buffalo Springfield to his chart-topping hits with Loggins and Messina, Messina has left an indelible mark on the music industry. His upcoming performance at the Bethel Woods Performing Arts Center is highly anticipated, promising a career-spanning show that will appeal to both long-time admirers and new fans alike.
Messina’s journey in music began with Buffalo Springfield, where he served as both producer and audio engineer before joining the band as its bass player. After the disbandment of Buffalo Springfield, Messina co-founded Poco with Richie Furay, defining a new genre of music known as country rock. The band released successful albums, including their debut “Pickin’ Up the Pieces” and later the Top 40 hits from their 1989 collection “Legacy.”
Following his time with Poco, Messina returned to producing music and discovered an unknown singer-songwriter named Kenny Loggins. What started as a casual collaboration resulted in the formation of the hit-making duo, Loggins and Messina. Over the years, the duo released eight albums, creating a legacy of timeless music that resonated with audiences worldwide before pursuing solo ventures.
After embarking on solo acoustic tours, Messina formed his band, The Road Runners, releasing a live album titled “Here, There & Everywhere.” Touring the country and playing to sold-out crowds, Messina continues to explore his musical identity and evolution as an artist.
In anticipation of his return to Bethel Woods, Messina reflects on his missed opportunity to perform at the original Woodstock festival with Poco and looks forward to revisiting some of his classic hits from Buffalo Springfield, Poco, Loggins and Messina, as well as introducing new arrangements of beloved songs. Fans can expect a special performance featuring a mix of iconic tracks such as “Call It Love” from Poco and a medley of songs from Loggins and Messina’s “Full Sail” album. Additionally, Messina plans to debut a reimagined version of Tommy James & the Shondells’ “Draggin’ The Line,” adding a fresh twist to a classic favorite.
