Alysa Liu’s Oakland celebration: What you need to know
The city of Oakland is preparing to honor Alysa Liu, a gold medal-winning figure skater and native of Oakland. Liu, who is 20 years old and currently enrolled at UCLA, made history at the 2026 Winter Olympics in Milan by becoming the first U.S. woman in two decades to win an individual medal in singles figure skating and the first in 24 years to claim gold. She was also part of the gold medal-winning U.S. figure skating team.
The celebration event will take place at Frank Ogawa Plaza in Oakland from noon to 1:30 p.m. Attendees will have the opportunity to hear Liu speak, as well as enjoy food and beverages from various vendors at the event. The celebration is a collaborative effort between Visit Oakland, the City of Oakland, Mayor Barbara Lee’s office, and sponsors Invisalign and PG&E.
Instead of a traditional parade, the celebration rally was chosen by Liu as a means to highlight Oakland’s diverse community and local artists. The event aims to showcase the vibrant spirit of Oakland and its support for talented individuals like Liu.
In addition to the celebration, a mural dedicated to Liu’s achievements has been created by the Illuminaries, a Bay Area street art group, at the corner of 43rd Street and Telegraph Avenue in Oakland.
Those interested in attending the celebration can register online at visitoakland.com/alysa-liu/#registration. Registration is required, with a limit of two tickets per registrant. Doors will open at 9 a.m., and due to the expected turnout, it is recommended to use public transportation to access the event.
The event details include the celebration running from noon to 1:30 p.m. on March 12 at Frank Ogawa Plaza. Attendance is free but requires registration through the Visit Oakland website. The city of Oakland is proud to honor one of its own, Alysa Liu, for her exceptional achievements in figure skating and her representation of the community on an international stage.
