Music festivals increase the risk of losing smartwatches

With the anticipation of music festivals like Hurricane, Rock am Ring, and Wacken Open Air on the horizon, many festival-goers are gearing up for the upcoming season by equipping themselves with high-tech smartwatches. These devices offer convenience and functionality, enabling users to stay connected and receive notifications, even in the midst of a noisy live performance.

While smartwatches have become popular accessories for music festivals, there is a downside to wearing them in crowded concert venues. Law enforcement officials have issued a stern warning to smartwatch wearers attending festivals, particularly regarding the unintentional activation of distress calls. In a notable incident at the Download Festival in Leicestershire, England in 2023, authorities received nearly 700 false emergency calls stemming from the festival grounds. These calls were triggered automatically by smartwatches and other personal devices, leading to unnecessary responses by emergency services.

To address this issue, police have advised festival-goers to switch their devices to airplane mode or power them off entirely to prevent inadvertent emergency calls. Many modern smartwatches, like the Apple Watch, are equipped with features such as accident detection, which may lead to false alarms in high-energy environments like music festivals. This warning is not limited to festivals in England alone but applies to events worldwide, as the upcoming festival season approaches.

For users of the Apple Watch, there are options available in the device’s iPhone application under “Emergency SOS” to manage emergency call settings and disable features like Automatic Crash Detection. Similar options may be found in the settings of smartwatches from other manufacturers, allowing users to prevent accidental emergency calls during festival activities. It’s essential for smartwatch wearers to familiarize themselves with these settings and take necessary precautions to avoid causing unnecessary disruptions during festival performances.

As festival-goers prepare for a summer filled with music, it’s crucial to be mindful of the potential risks associated with wearing smartwatches in crowded venues. By taking proactive steps to prevent false emergency calls and being aware of their device’s settings, attendees can enjoy the festival experience without inadvertently triggering distress signals. Stay informed, stay connected, and most importantly, stay safe during the upcoming festival season.
