LIVE EVENT: The Streets in Fremantle on March 8, 2026
The Streets, fronted by Mike Skinner, recently performed a memorable show at the Fremantle Arts Centre in Western Australia. During the concert, the band presented their seminal second album, ‘A Grand Don’t Come For Free,’ in its entirety. This rock opera, or rather a garage/hip-hop opera, tells the story of Skinner losing a thousand pounds and embarking on a series of adventures to try to recover the money.
Unlike traditional theatrical performances, Skinner delivers the narrative with the authenticity of an urban street poet. The stage was shrouded in shadows for most of the performance, creating a mysterious atmosphere. Despite the album’s theatrical presentation, Skinner remained relatively static during the first half of the show.
The music accompanying the storyline was organic and performed live by a talented band. There were no samples, only jazzy and breakbeat drums, keys, bass, guitar, and featured vocalists. ‘A Grand Don’t Come For Free’ is a rare album that is best experienced in its entirety, with each song contributing to the plot seamlessly.
The opening track, “It Was Supposed To Be So Easy,” set the tone for the evening, followed by other standout tracks like “Blinded By The Light,” “Fit But Don’t You Know It,” and “Dry Your Eyes.” The band took a brief intermission after the album’s conclusion before returning to perform a set of their more popular songs.
During the second set, Skinner displayed more energy and engaged with the audience between songs. His candid remarks and interactions added a personal touch to the performance. “Original Pirate Material” tracks like “Has It Come To This” and “Let’s Push Things Forward” were well-received, along with selections from other albums.
As the concert reached its conclusion, Skinner expressed gratitude to the audience for their support throughout the tour. His candid remarks and charismatic stage presence resonated with fans. Despite his urban poetry background, Skinner’s inherent charm and sense of humor shone through during the show.
