Michael Stipe dances to the theme song of ‘Rooster’

Fresh off a surprise appearance at an R.E.M. tribute show in Brooklyn, Michael Stipe, the former frontman of the band, has released new solo music. Alongside producer Andrew Watt, known for his work with Pearl Jam and Lady Gaga, Stipe has unveiled “I Played the Fool,” the theme song for the new HBO series Rooster starring Steve Carrell.

The track, co-written by Stipe and Watt, features the talents of blink-182 drummer Travis Barker and Pearl Jam touring guitarist Josh Klinghoffer. Stipe expressed his excitement about contributing to Rooster, stating that he is a huge fan of everyone involved and honored to be part of “I Played the Fool.” Watt, on the other hand, hailed Stipe as a hero and emphasized the dream-like experience of collaborating with the legendary songwriter. According to Watt, Stipe’s unique touch elevates Rooster with a blend of humor and emotion reminiscent of the beloved TV show Friends.

In Rooster, Carrell portrays a college professor who also dabbles as a paperback author, catering to lazy beach reads. Co-created by Bill Lawrence, the show has a personal connection to Watt as his daughter Charlotte, a model and musician, is engaged to Lawrence. The team behind the series had always planned to infuse music from their college days in the ’80s, with R.E.M. holding a significant place in their hearts. Tarses, the co-creator, recalled his emotional reaction upon hearing an early demo of “I Played the Fool,” underscoring the tremendous impact Stipe’s contribution had on the show.

For Stipe, “I Played the Fool” marks a rare foray into solo music following R.E.M.’s dissolution in 2011, as he has been diligently crafting his full-length debut over the years.
