Busan Rock Festival awarded ‘Preliminary Global Festival’ status by Culture Ministry
The Busan International Rock Festival, South Korea’s most established rock festival, has recently earned the prestigious title of being a “Preliminary Global Festival” in the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism’s global festival development program. This recognition is part of a broader strategy to bolster domestic cultural tourism events with the potential to attract a global audience, with the ultimate goal of enticing 30 million inbound tourists to the country.
As a result of this designation, the festival will receive 250 million won ($175,000) in government funding, as well as access to expert consultations and tailored support services. The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism will additionally offer assistance in areas such as international marketing and promotion, the development of global tourism products, and enhanced visitor experiences through the implementation of AI-driven multilingual support systems.
Earlier this year, the Busan International Rock Festival was also named a “2026-2027 Cultural Tourism Festival” by the ministry. Looking ahead, the city of Busan has ambitious plans to elevate the festival’s status to that of renowned international events like the UK’s Glastonbury Festival and Japan’s Fuji Rock Festival.
A city official expressed their commitment to solidifying the festival’s position as a global cultural phenomenon by emphasizing the importance of delivering high-quality programming to secure continued government funding through annual performance assessments.
It is clear that the Busan International Rock Festival’s recent accolade as a “Preliminary Global Festival” signifies a significant milestone in the event’s trajectory towards becoming a world-class music festival that resonates with audiences worldwide. The festival’s rich history and commitment to showcasing diverse musical talent from around the globe make it a prime candidate for further growth and international recognition in the years to come.
