Major album releases are causing more traffic accidents.
A recent study has indicated a concerning correlation between major album releases and an increase in road traffic accidents. Conducted by a team from Harvard Medical School and published by the National Bureau of Economic Research, the paper titled “Smartphones, Online Music Streaming and Traffic Fatalities” delved into the impact of Spotify streaming data on road safety.
Analysing data from 2017 to 2022, the researchers discovered a significant uptick in smartphone use, up by a staggering 40%, on days when major albums were released. Surprisingly, this spike in phone activity was accompanied by a 15% increase in traffic fatalities. The researchers postulate that some drivers may become so engrossed in listening to new albums by their favorite artists that their focus on the road diminishes, leading to errors behind the wheel.
However, it’s essential to note that Fridays, when most major albums are released, are typically busier on the roads, with the weekend onset contributing to increased traffic volume. Unfortunately, the scope of the study was limited to recent years due to the synchronization of global music release dates in 2015. Previously, release days varied by region, with Tuesdays in the US and Mondays in the UK being notable examples.
Interestingly, the study also found that fatalities were more prevalent on days with favorable weather conditions, suggesting that clear skies may lead to decreased driver vigilance compared to rainy days. Furthermore, deaths were disproportionately higher in single-occupant vehicles on album release days, possibly due to the lack of passengers to manage distractions, such as adjusting the stereo system.
One contributing factor to the prevailing trend of major album releases on Fridays can be traced back to Beyoncé, who kickstarted the shift with the surprise release of her self-titled album on a Friday in December 2013. Her deliberate choice to allow fans ample time to digest the music over the weekend inadvertently influenced the broader music industry to follow suit.
While the study sheds light on a concerning phenomenon, it underscores the importance of maintaining focus and vigilance while driving, particularly during peak traffic hours and on days of heightened distraction like major album releases. Enforcing responsible driving habits, regardless of external stimuli, is crucial in ensuring road safety and reducing the risk of accidents in an increasingly connected and distracted world.
