Grace Givertz says farewell to love on her new folk album
On her latest album, “Midnight Feature,” Grace Givertz delves into the challenges of modern dating through her heartfelt songs. With tracks like “Black Belt,” Givertz candidly tackles the experience of dating as a biracial woman. The song humorously pokes fun at a specific archetype – the progressive white guy who is overly proud of dating a Black woman.
Reflecting on her personal experiences, Givertz shared the inspiration behind her music. Recalling a particularly bad date where she felt unheard, she channeled those emotions into her compelling lyrics. Collaborating with fellow musician Addy Harris, also biracial, Givertz sheds light on the complexities of interracial dating and the microaggressions that can accompany it.
Born and raised in Florida and now based in Boston, Givertz brings a unique perspective to her music. As a Black artist in a predominantly white folk scene, she has grappled with feelings of isolation. To combat this, Givertz intentionally sought out diverse musicians to collaborate with on her album. By prioritizing voices from marginalized communities, she aimed to create a space where everyone’s talent could shine.
