Classic rock songs that went unnoticed until years later
on the other side of the wall echoed a version of the song back so the people on the East side could hear it. That moment solidified the song as a hopeful anthem for freedom across the world.
Then, in 2016, a cover by Peter Gabriel and Sting at the Rock Paper Scissors Tour received much-needed attention. And further cameos by famous artists during the COVID-19 pandemic also brought Bowie’s masterpiece back into the limelight. With themes of enduring love and bravery, it’s no wonder that the song captured the hearts of so many people and continues to do so in 2026.
Dreams — Fleetwood Mac
Fleetwood Mac’s “Dreams” from their 1977 album “Rumours” is a song that almost wasn’t. Christine McVie was ready to ditch it early on in production, but Stevie Nicks saw potential in it and fought to save it. The song ended up being a chart-topping hit, raking in radio play and sales figures. However, the song took on new life in 2020 when it became a TikTok trend.
TikTok user @420doggface208 skateboarded down the street, sipping cranberry juice and singing along to the song, and the video went viral. The clip was so good, it inspired Mick Fleetwood — the drummer, not the Mac portion of the name — to make his own copycat video. People loved the original video so much, “Dreams” charted on Spotify and earned its own Billboard Hot 100 spot, even though it was initially released decades prior. The song gained tens of millions of streams and became a sensation in 2020.
