Curiosity uncovers surprising find in Martian rock
An unexpected surprise was uncovered on Mars when Curiosity Rover accidentally cracked open a seemingly ordinary rock. In May 2024, as the rover made its way over the fragile mineral lump, it caused the rock to split, revealing vivid yellow crystals of pure elemental sulfur, also known as brimstone.
While sulfates are common on Mars, this discovery marked the first time elemental sulfur in its pure form was identified on the planet.
