Mike McCready reveals his new grunge rock opera ‘Farewell To Seasons’
Pearl Jam’s Mike McCready is set to unveil a long-awaited passion project that delves deep into Seattle’s iconic grunge scene. After more than two decades of work, McCready is ready to share “Farewell To Seasons,” a rock opera infused with the spirit of the turbulent music scene that defined the late 1980s and early 1990s in Seattle. This ambitious project includes a graphic novel companion and an original soundtrack, offering a comprehensive look into the era that shaped modern rock music.
The storyline revolves around the fictional character David Williams, whose experiences parallel McCready’s own journey before Pearl Jam. Alongside Williams are Angela Sunrise and Jonathan Alexander, embodying different aspects of the Seattle music scene – its innovation, ambition, and the inevitable tragedies. “Farewell To Seasons” presents an alternate history of grunge, intertwining the chaos, camaraderie, and cultural explosion that paved the way for legendary bands like Nirvana, Soundgarden, Alice in Chains, and, of course, Pearl Jam.
McCready describes the project as a tribute to the vibrancy, community, and disorder of Seattle’s music landscape. Rooted in his personal encounters, the historical fantasy depicted in the graphic novel is accompanied by a “lost” rock opera, featuring original music composed from Williams’ perspective. Initially conceived as a stage musical, the project evolved into an 11-track rock opera during the COVID-19 pandemic, showcasing McCready’s versatility as a vocalist after vocal lessons to meet the demands of the narrative.
Collaborating with Z2 Comics, McCready worked closely with Mark Sable and Sebastián Piriz to bring the graphic novel to life. Featuring cover art by R. Kikuo Johnson, the novel promises a poignant reflection on the essence of the Seattle music scene during its prime. The accompanying soundtrack boasts an impressive lineup of Seattle rock icons, including Duff McKagan, Stefan Lessard, Mike Musburger, and Chris Friel, among others. Tracks like “Queen Of The Season,” “Jonathan Alexander,” and “Spoken” showcase McCready’s vocal talent alongside his signature guitar prowess.
“Farewell To Seasons” is not just a nod to the past but a contemplation of ambition, fame, and the transient nature of musical influence. It delves into the reasons behind Seattle’s cultural impact, exploring the price of success and the fragility of music’s lasting legacy. Scheduled for release on October 6, 2026, the rock opera offers a unique opportunity for fans to delve into the genesis of grunge while experiencing McCready’s narrative and musical evolution beyond Pearl Jam’s boundaries.
