Death Cab For Cutie Reveals New Album ‘I Built You A Tower’ with Release of New Song
After a brief hiatus, Death Cab for Cutie is making a triumphant return to the music scene with the announcement of their 11th studio album, I Built You A Tower, which is slated for release on June 5th. To treat excited fans, the band has released the first track off the album, “Riptide.”
This upcoming album represents a special moment for the band as they venture back into the realm of independent music. Frontman Benjamin Gibbard reunites with fellow bandmates Nicholas Harmer, Jason McGerr, Dave Depper, and Zac Rae for this project, which was expertly produced and engineered by industry titan John Congleton.
The creative process behind I Built You A Tower was swift and intense, with the album coming together in just three short weeks of recording. This condensed timeline allowed the band to capture their unique chemistry and raw live energy in the studio, resulting in a body of work that combines their longstanding musical bond with an ever-evolving sound. In a statement, Depper expressed, “The anniversary tours exorcised any nostalgia in our systems…We felt part of this powerful force greater than all of us and went into the studio with a sense of, how can we capture that feeling and put it into something new?” Harmer added, “The whole experience of this record got us back to the earliest versions of this band: If the musicians in the room like what we’re working on, that’s enough. We reconnected with the confidence that comes with that.”
Discussing their latest single, “Riptide,” Gibbard shed light on its themes, revealing, “‘Riptides’ is about the challenge of dealing with personal struggles as the world around us experiences tragedy and loss on an unfathomable scale. And how when these two elements intertwine themselves in our psyches, it feels utterly paralyzing.”
Fans eagerly await the release of I Built You A Tower as Death Cab for Cutie embarks on this new journey into independent music with fresh perspectives, revitalized passion, and a sound that is bound to captivate audiences once again.
