Pearl Jam Guitarist Releases Graphic Novel and Rock Opera After Two Decades of Effort
Mike McCready has recently unveiled his latest creative endeavor, a graphic novel and rock opera titled Farewell to Seasons, which he released through Z2 Comics. This project has been a labor of love for the Pearl Jam guitarist, as he dedicated 20 years to its development. The narrative transports readers and listeners to the vibrant Seattle music scene of the mid-1980s to the mid-1990s.
The inspiration for Farewell to Seasons stemmed from McCready’s deep connection to the creative, communal, and sometimes chaotic atmosphere of Seattle’s music world. According to Rolling Stone, McCready shared, “It’s a story I’ve been developing for many years, inspired by the creativity, community, and chaos of the Seattle music scene.” The heart of the project revolves around a historical fantasy tale set within this dynamic setting. McCready also included a ‘lost’ rock opera component, with original music sung from the perspective of David Williams, a central character in the story.
McCready drew parallels between himself and David Williams, with additional characters Angela Sunrise and Jonathan Alexander rounding out the narrative. Teaming up with writer Mark Sable and illustrator Sebastian Piriz, McCready brought his vision to life. The genesis of this ambitious project began during the COVID-19 pandemic when McCready sought advice from famed director Cameron Crowe. Originally envisioning a stage musical, the project evolved into a graphic novel thanks to Z2’s input.
The rock opera component features six songs, with McCready taking on the role of lead vocalist. Prior to recording, McCready honed his vocal skills for two to three years, while Thunderpussy’s Molly Sides provides backing vocals. The musical accompaniment includes bass performances by Duff McKagan and Stefan Lessard, as well as drummers Mike Musburger, Chris Friel, and Nate Yaccino.
Interested fans can already pre-order Farewell to Seasons on the Z2 Comics website, with physical copies set to hit stores on Oct. 6. Deluxe editions exclusively house the music, making it unavailable on streaming services upon launch. Z2 Editor in Chief Rantz A. Hoseley shared his excitement for the project: “Having been in the heart of the NW music scene as a journalist in the 1990s, I’ve wanted for years to work on a project that would reflect what it was actually like for the musicians and the fans when ‘the world came to Seattle.'”
With 35 years of guitar-playing experience under his belt, McCready’s musical journey includes stints in Temple of the Dog and Mad Season, as well as an induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame with Pearl Jam. Farewell to Seasons marks a new chapter in McCready’s artistic evolution, showcasing his multi-faceted talents and unwavering dedication to storytelling through music and visuals.
