Their hit song “Animal I Have Become” from 2006 joined their debut single “I Hate Everything About You” in passing a billion streams on the platform. Despite the dark subject matter of the song, it has become one of Three Days Grace’s most popular songs over the years. Co-frontman Adam Gontier shared that the hard rock anthem was inspired by his struggles with painkiller addiction and the heavy emotions that followed. The band initially wrote the demo for the track while touring Europe nearly two years before its official release.
Reflecting on the creation of “Animal I Have Become,” bassist Brad Walst recalled, “I remember saying [that] that riff would be great heavy.” When they returned to North America, they started jamming the song as a heavier piece, realizing they had “nailed it.” The song peaked at No. 1 on the U.S. Mainstream Rock chart and spent seven weeks at the top out of its 48-week run. It also reached No. 1 on the U.S. Alternative Airplay chart for two weeks and remained on the chart for 41 weeks. In their native Canada, the track achieved double platinum status in 2018, selling over 160,000 certified units.
The band expressed their journey with the song, stating, “On the back of a bus in Germany, what started as a dissonant riff and a nod to the Beatles became ‘Animal I Have Become.’ What began as a raw idea on the road for a band from a small town like Norwood grew into a song that connected with millions around the world.” They were elated to see it join the billions club on Spotify and become the only Canadian band with two songs in that elite category. This remarkable achievement has solidified Three Days Grace’s position as rock legends.
