After nearly thirty years, the unreleased Butthole Surfers album, After The Astronaut, is finally seeing the light of day. The shelved album will be officially released on June 26, 2026, by Sunset Blvd. Records, providing fans with a long-awaited glimpse into the band’s creative vision for the much-speculated record.

Back in 1998, When After The Astronaut was initially completed, it was suddenly removed from Capitol Records’ release schedule, creating uncertainty and leaving fans in limbo. The label allegedly pressured the band to produce something more mainstream, but anyone familiar with the band’s unconventional back catalog knew that this wasn’t in line with their artistic ethos.

Guitarist Paul Leary reminisced on the band’s excitement following the success of their previous record and the hit single “Pepper.” However, the souring relationship with the label led to legal disputes, ultimately leading to their exit and the sale of their contract to Hollywood Records. Despite the uncomfortable experience of the label wanting to make changes to the album, the band’s creativity remained intact, culminating in the 2001 release of Weird Revolution.

Now, the band has the autonomy to release the original recordings of After The Astronaut, returning to their roots and honoring the initial inspiration behind the project. Rather than conforming to the mainstream rock trends of the late ’90s, the band doubled down on their iconic experimental style, venturing into electronic, industrial, and psychedelic music landscapes.

Drummer King Coffey described After The Astronaut as an engaging project, epitomizing free-spirited creativity and a willingness to explore unconventional directions. Harnessing the latest digital tools of the time, the band engaged in an uninhibited musical journey, akin to their earlier work on Locust Abortion Technician. The focus was not on commercial success but on genuine creative expression and innovation.

Featuring Gibby Haynes on vocals and synthesisers, Paul Leary on guitar, bass, and keyboards, and King Coffey on drum machines, After The Astronaut showcases a diverse musical palette. The album was produced and mixed by Leary, engineered by Stuart Sullivan at Arlyn Recording Studio, and mastered by Howie Weinberg.

For fans of alternative music history, the release of After The Astronaut is a welcomed surprise. It’s a chance to delve into the band’s creative process, witness their artistic evolution, and hear the album the way it was originally intended, free from commercial constraints. This long-overdue release is a testament to enduring creative spirit and further solidifies the Butthole Surfers’ status as innovators in the alternative music scene.
