Jazz musician Zoh Amba switches to Matador as singer-songwriter with guitar roots
Zoh Amba rose to fame within the underground music scene as a free jazz saxophonist, bringing a unique and captivating sound that resonated with both experimental rock fans and jazz enthusiasts. Their talent and creative approach earned them a spot on the list of the best new artists of 2022. It was no surprise when Amba joined the experimental supergroup Beings alongside Steve Gunn, Jim White, and Shahzad Ismaily, or collaborated on a record with Chris Corsano and Bill Orcutt. However, their latest venture into the realm of indie rock is an unexpected and intriguing development.
Matador Records recently announced the signing of Zoh Amba as a guitar-based singer-songwriter. The label shared in a press release that Amba’s upcoming work with Matador will explore a new direction, focusing on their skills as a guitarist and songwriter while drawing inspiration from their upbringing in Kingsport, Tennessee. To introduce this new chapter in their musical journey, Amba will be performing at New York’s Night Club 101 on April 17. Following this performance, they will embark on a tour, supporting Folk Bitch Trio in the spring and sharing the stage with Courtney Barnett in the summer.
Ahead of their upcoming shows, fans can enjoy professionally recorded live performances of two tracks, “Thousand Years” and “Southern Soil,” captured at the Owl in Brooklyn last month. These recordings offer a taste of what audiences can expect from Amba’s live performances on tour.
