Wolverhampton retail park to crack down on anti-social behaviour
A crackdown on anti-social behavior and violence at a popular retail park in Wolverhampton is on the horizon as new measures are set to be implemented. The city council has given the green light to a three-year Public Spaces Protection Order (PSPO) at Bentley Bridge Retail and Leisure Park following a period of public consultation. This order will come into effect on 25 March and aims to address the growing concerns regarding unruly behavior in the area.
Under this new PSPO, police will have the authority to intervene and ask groups of three or more individuals to leave the premises if their presence is causing a disturbance. Additionally, officers can request individuals to remove face coverings if there are no valid reasons for wearing them. Councillor Obaida Ahmed emphasized the importance of maintaining Bentley Bridge as a safe and welcoming space for all visitors.
The decision to implement the PSPO came after a noticeable rise in anti-social behavior, particularly involving groups of youths, in and around the retail park in recent years. The city council recognized the need for action to address these concerns and ensure the safety of all patrons. It is essential to note that the PSPO is not intended to target genuine shoppers or individuals wearing face coverings for legitimate reasons, such as medical or religious purposes.
Drawing on the success of a similar PSPO introduced in Wolverhampton city center in 2024, which led to a significant decrease in recorded crimes, including a notable reduction in robberies, the council is optimistic about the positive impact this new order will have at Bentley Bridge. Councillor Ahmed highlighted the importance of learning from past successes and expressed confidence in the potential of the PSPO to improve the overall security and atmosphere of the retail park.
The introduction of this PSPO signals the council’s commitment to addressing anti-social behavior and ensuring the well-being of residents and visitors in Wolverhampton.
