Nicki Minaj Faces Lawsuit from Former Law Firm Over $229K in Unpaid Fees

Nicki Minaj, the famous rapper, is currently facing a lawsuit from her former law firm, Gordon Rees Scully Mansukhani. The law firm is pursuing Minaj for an outstanding amount of $229,541.75 in unpaid legal fees. The lawsuit was filed on March 4, 2026, in Los Angeles Superior Court by GRSM, which represented Minaj in a copyright infringement case in 2024.

GRSM claims that they started working on Minaj’s defense in October 2024 in the Julius Johnson v. Onika Tanya Maraj case, a federal copyright dispute from the Central District of California. The firm asserts that they provided legal services, sent monthly invoices, and received no objections from Minaj regarding charges, yet she never settled her bills.

Emails included in the legal filing reveal details that could complicate Minaj’s position. GRSM insisted on having an engagement agreement signed by Minaj as early as October 2, 2024. Minaj’s attorney, Jordan Siev from Reed Smith, explained the delay by stating that Minaj was on tour. Despite having no signed agreement, GRSM partner Susan Meyer decided to continue working under the assumption that Minaj accepted the terms. This decision has led to legal claims of breach of contract, quantum meruit, and account stated against Minaj.

Billing records indicate that the law firm has been working on the case since late 2023, with substantial fees incurred between August and November 2024. In a single month, GRSM billed Minaj $74,150.25. Overall, the billings amounted to $281,107.45, with only $51,000 paid and a minor write-off, resulting in the current balance of $229,541.75 at the heart of the lawsuit.

The standard hourly rates charged by GRSM varied from $225 for paralegals to $650 for senior partners. Minaj has not publicly addressed the lawsuit, and the original Johnson copyright case is still pending in federal court.

In conclusion, the legal battle between Nicki Minaj and her former law firm demonstrates the complexities that can arise in professional relationships. The dispute over unpaid legal fees underscores the importance of clear contractual agreements and timely payment practices to avoid such lawsuits. Despite the ongoing litigation, Minaj has yet to respond to the allegations brought against her.
