Roger Clyne & The Peacemakers Drop Ninth Album, Hell to Breakfast
Roger Clyne & The Peacemakers have recently released their ninth studio album titled “Hell to Breakfast,” marking a significant milestone as Roger Clyne also commemorates the 30th anniversary of his debut album, “Fizzy Fuzzy Big & Buzzy,” with The Refreshments. Clyne’s musical journey has seen him evolve from his earlier work with The Refreshments to his later projects with Roger Clyne & The Peacemakers, showcasing a blend of jangly guitar rock, clever lyrics, and an energetic live performance that has garnered a dedicated fan base over the years.
Before embarking on his musical career, Clyne immersed himself in Cultural Anthropology studies at Arizona State University, focusing on mariachis during a transformative Spanish-immersion experience in Ensenada, Mexico. This cultural encounter heavily influenced the horn-driven sound of “Fizzy Fuzzy Big & Buzzy” and laid the foundation for Clyne’s distinctive musical style that resonates through his subsequent albums. In a musical landscape dominated by grunge and folk in the mid-1990s, Clyne’s fusion of humor, melody, and borderland influences set him apart, establishing a lasting legacy that endures to this day.
Following lineup changes that led to the dissolution of The Refreshments, Clyne teamed up with co-founder P.H. Naffah to form Roger Clyne & The Peacemakers in 1999. Operating as an independent act, the band has maintained a close connection with its audience through regular tours and unique initiatives like the annual music festival, Circus Mexicus, held in Puerto Peñasco, Mexico. The production of “Hell to Breakfast” saw Naffah take on the role of producer, emphasizing a collaborative and experimental approach to creating the record.
The album’s title, “Hell to Breakfast,” draws inspiration from a phrase frequently used by Roger’s father, Doc Clyne, during chaotic moments. Recorded at Yellow Dog Studios with Mike Harmeier and Adam Odor, the album features guest contributions from artists like Sergio Mendoza and Miles Nielsen, enriching the musical tapestry of the record. Tracks like “Fireflies,” “You Got Lightnin’,” and “Sleepin’ With My Rifle” showcase the band’s diverse sound, blending elements of rock, Americana, and indie-pop with a touch of mariachi influence.
